"An Evangelical Rebel in the Ranks: Saving the Planet, Ecumenism, and Political Dissent,"
when:7:30pm-8:00pm
where: Multi Purpose Room of the Student Services Center
The Burke Lectureship in Religion and Society will sponsor a lecture,
"An Evangelical Rebel in the Ranks: Saving the Planet, Ecumenism, and
Political Dissent," by Richard Cizik, the President of the New
Evangelical Partnership for the Common Good.
Cizik served for ten years as Vice President for Governmental Affairs
and chief spokesperson of the National Association of Evangelicals. He
left that position, while remaining an evangelical, because he disagreed
with the National Association about the social application of
evangelicalism. Cizik has been a leader in bringing scientists and
evangelical pastors together on the "Scientist and Evangelical Call to
Action" to curb global warming. He also has played an important role in
supporting human rights for gays and lesbians, including the right to
same sex marriage, as well as in advocating gun control legislation,
economic justice, and cooperation with the Obama Administration.

Thursday
"Balancing Act: Career and Personal Life for Women in STEMM"
when:5:30pm-9:00p,where: Medical Education and Telemedicine (MET) Building Auditorium
Professional women often consider the decision of whether or not to have children, and if so, when to have them. Many women fear professional repercussions of having children at the "wrong" time or fertility issues should they wait to have them at the "perfect" time. San Diego State University Professor of Psychology and author of The Impatient Women's Guide to Getting Pregnant, Dr. Jean Twenge, recently authored an Atlantic article entitled, "How Long Can You Wait to Have a Baby?" which takes a critical look at current fertility data. Dr. Twenge will speak to us regarding her article, followed by a faculty panel discussion to share stories and approaches to this topic for women in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEMM). Be prepared for a candid discussion of our fears and concerns regarding parenthood as it pertains to our professional lives.
Please join us on Thursday, November 21, 2013 from 6-9pm for "Balancing Act: Career and Personal Life" hosted by UCSD's Graduate Women in Science and Engineering (GradWISE) and American Medical Womens Association (AMWA) Chapter with support from the Graduate Student Association, the San Diego Chapter of the Association for Women in Science (AWIS), the UCSD Postdoctoral Association, and the UCSD Office of Postdoctoral and Visiting Scholar Affairs. This event will be held on the main UCSD campus in the Medical Education and Telemedicine (MET) Building Auditorium, and light refreshments will be served at 5:30pm. Please RSVP to http://tinyurl.com/balanceucsd by Nov 14. Questions about this event may be directed to [email protected].
